Early 19th Century - Inspired by the Industrial Revolution
Charles Babbage's desire to "Calculate by Steam" led to the design of the Analytical Engine, a general purpose, programmable machine. Much of what we know about that machine (which was never built) comes from the writing of Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace.
